Poojya Doddappa Appa
The founder of the Sangha

The turn of the nineteenth century was a period of political, social and economic turmoil and disorientation, but the Sangha became a torchbearer of the modern education systems in the northern part of Karnataka and Poojya Doddappa Appa became the pioneering spirt and visionary who paved the way for the educational development of the north Karnataka which suffered retardation of all kinds under the Nizam’s rule. The vision of Doddappa Appa understood that if the region has to be developed, it can only happen if the people are free, and if the people should be free, it can only be possible if they are educated; accomplish the mission of the Sangha – emancipation through education.

Back in 1918 when the First World War was still going on, Poojya Doddappa Appa established the Sharanabasaveshwar Public Library in Gulbarga region to create awareness and awaken the people of this region. This was the beginning of the much needed educational start for the region that heralded the phenomenal expansion of the educational activities and thereby transforming the region into an educational hub.
